Is Google stepping up to Microsoft Bing?

A good number of SEOs must have found this title intriguing. Many would say: “What’s the point? Microsoft Bing might be catching up but Google IS the leader!” True enough. And another thing on that, we “advanced” Internet users are aware that Bing exists and getting hyped by the novelty of it (this doesn’t mean that it is better) but your average user, say your mom or your little brother, is still heads down on Google. This is why things will not or take time to change. I don’t think that we’ll soon be hearing: “I “binged” your name…”

This in no means supposes that Google is so sure about its position that it is just letting Microsoft be. Its my opinion that subtle stand up is being made as usual by Google. This must be the reason that Google is fortifying its position by showing how great it is on the search market. How? By overtly putting its business model forward. Illustration!

In the past Google showed its tools like this:

products

Strangely enough, since Bing started out, a new element found its way over on the .com site of Google. I don’t know if you’ve noticed it. Its a link showing you that you can discover the web with Google.

google

The landing page is also quite original as it is an optimised version of the Google products page with videos showing how the goods are so good actually. Not just a bunch of links.

google-searchtips

To add up to all that, many of you must surely be aware that Yahoo! will also be launching its own analytics tool which sure looks tasty. This seems to have had a certain influence on the Google Analytics home page.

analytics

Put it on the back of the crisis or on that of strong, aggressive competition that is showing up on the search market but the big G is now working hard to counter the coming battles or even stiffle them. Do you have any opinion on that?

The fight started years back and everyone wants to be part of it.
New players like facebook and even twitter will definitely enter the game in some years, if not already.

In order to take Google’s first position, Bing should really offer something new, but I ask myself..what? Perhaps even better results and from the reviews, it seems that Bing is already doing great in this field.

    Lets Bet Bing!

  2. True enough, the confrontation does not date from yesterday but if you were in Google’s position, with the economic crisis and all, you would surely try to secure your position even if the signals are still very faint.

Bing doesn’t bring anything really innovative but you never know what’s hidden behind all this. I mean, Microsoft knows that it can’t fight a giant such as Google but it still is going heads down in the battle… So can you say that the battle is definitely lost for it?

Good observations. In my personal opinion I think Google will be facing really strong competition in the future even if not so soon. I see Twitter a more stronger opponent for Google however rather than Bing.

Now its also that if Microsoft is moving forward with the project even though knowing Google is the boss, there must be some hidden agenda or maybe some unexpected turn that shall occur.

    • Twitter is the best in what it does, microblogging but is not a real competitor to Google. I mean, its great and even better in getting you to real time information compared to Google but it still has a long way to go. Another drawback is that it does not generate immediate money such as adsense. Maybe Google will come up with something like “Adsense for tweets”. In Twitter’s case there’s something that bothers me. It is getting a lot of response and coverage in news and all but not making the trend such as Google and Facebook are making.

Hello wdbm. This is my first comment, and would like to thank you for this blog. I’m pleased to see Mauritians keeping up with web trends, i mean real web trends :) .

Anyways, concerning Bing and our good old Google .. the very first time I typed a keyword on Bing, I was quite upset with the display of the results. My reaction was ‘pffff … there’s so much Google in that!’. I don’t know how they’ll prove people wrong with respect to their search engine ‘originality’ and new functionalities.. but I personally think that as soon as web surfers see something they do recognise, they’ll get back to their old habits. Maybe Microsoft should work some more on their visual display, and who knows maybe they’ve got some more suprises coming up concerning Bing.

Microsoft really wants to have it’s share of the search engine market, we all heard about the Microsoft-Yahoo! episode, and apparently Balmer still has hopes concerning a partnership with Yahoo! But It’s Not Google, they’re right on that one. Cheers.

  5. Thanks for your comment Hanz, you’re welcome. Sorry for the late reply.

You’re absolutely right in terms of usage. There’s one thing that the engineers seem to always forget, the most unpredictable variable: the human being. I don’t know what entity will be able to come up to something as huge as Google but I think that we’ll live with this. Here also, I think that the Human being will be the key… just imagine a new way of browsing or searching or what not…

  10. This is an interesting post.

I am not 100% sure that Google is reacting to Microsoft’s launch of Bing. Maybe they are just enhancing their “beta” products as they have been doing regularly for the past 10 years.

Incidentally, it’s nice to read comments in créole. But there is absolutely no reason to start a holy war because you took some time to approve the comment

  11. Thanks for your comment Avinash. Google products being perpetual betas might also explain that. Very true. I didn’t tackle the question from that angle.

i have been evaluating the search results of Microsoft Bing compared to Google and they are comparable. Bing gives almost the same relevant search results just like Google.

Bing search engine gives almost the same search results as Google. Looks like Google will now have a tough competition when it comes to search engine technology.
